Rhamphochromis sp."nkanda"

Rhamphochromis types can be found in entire Lake Malawi. Several kinds of this species are living together in open water close to the coast to a few hundred meters from this coast. The Rhamphochromis example shown here is an unidentified example which was caught in the neighbourhood of Nkanda in the northeastern part of the lake and because of that it`s temporary called Rhamphochromis sp."nkanda".

In the lake the males of Rhamphochromis types can grow from 24 cm to about 40 cm, depending on the different species.

It`s best to keep Rhamphochromis types in a specially for them prepared tank with a lot of swimming space and together with other large species which are also living in open water areas.

In the lake they are feeding themselves with "usipa" (Engraulicypris sardella), a species which looks like a pilchard. In the aquarium we also have to feed them with such kind of young fish.
